Winos or Wild Leek is a sacred spring plant that once was so abundant in the Winooski River watershed that the Abenaki stewards of this land gave it this name, which translates to the “Onion Land”. Sadly, on many public lands here in Chittenden county wild leeks have been over-harvested to the point of extinction, but they continue to thrive in other locations with proper stewardship.  Please join us for an educational opportunity this May in Westford to visit a thriving population of ramps / wild leek / winos / Allium tricoccum, and learn from elder Tom Cady who has been sustainably stewarding them for decades.

Tom will give us an overview of his harvesting practice that helps to support an abundant population of this sought after and highly pressured wild edible. We will learn about proper techniques for harvesting and transplanting to contribute to a sustainable future for this delicious plant relative that has been thriving in the Winooski Valley for a very long time.

In years past we have had great success transplanting from this patch and we want to share our experience with other like-minded folks who seek to educate themselves on how to be a better steward of this beloved relative that is a symbol of our region for all who live here in the Winooski Valley. Participants will help us move some plants to areas where they can thrive and start to re-populate other sites in Chittenden County.

*donate what you can~ everyone is welcome and your time and attention is valuable too!
